Electrical Foundations robotics camp

Pittsburgh Technical College is pleased to partner with the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy to offer an Electrical Foundations robotics camp.

Coding & Electronics mini-camp for hands-on learning

If you’re a boy or girl who enjoys hands-on learning, this camp is for you! Together we’ll explore the basics of coding and electronics in step-by-step activities. You’ll use an Arduino (programmable micro-controller/hand-held computer) along with hardware such as Breadboards, LED lights, and more. Plus, we’ll discuss STEM career options such as engineering, robotics, and software development.
Who: Students in grades 8-9 during 2023-2024

Create Your Own Micropet

This camp is a good fit for kids who like to make, design, and create! Together we’ll experiment with micro:bits, code with Makecode, practice “design thinking,” and collaborate on a hands-on, creative project.
What is a micro:bit? The micro:bit is a programmable pocket-size micro-computer with LED displays, sensors, and more. Together we’ll design and make a MicroPet – a small, imaginary, ideal pet! No previous coding experience is required. We’ll use Makecode, Microsoft’s easy block-based coding environment.

Intro to Scratch: Animate a Name workshop
In this workshop you’ll design and code a creative display of your name or the name of your favorite pet, musician, sports team, etc. You’ll bring the letters to life through animation, sound, and music. In this workshop we’ll use Scratch (block-based coding), and no previous coding experience is required. Plus, we’ll discuss opportunities in STEM careers.

Artificial Intelligence workshop
Students will participate in code.org’s “AI for Oceans” interactive on-line activity and discover how robots can be trained via Artificial Intelligence (AI) to rid the ocean of pollution. Students will “train” the virtual robot and experience how a data set impacts Machine Learning. Plus, we’ll discuss how STEM careers can positively impact the environment.

Cyber Detectives workshop
If you love spending time on your computer, this workshop gives you a behind-the-scenes look at your favorite device. You’ll play an active game (“How the Internet Works”), discover what sharks have to do with the internet, write and decipher secret codes, defeat computer viruses in a computer game, attempt password cracking, and more!
Plus, we’ll explore cyber security – how to use your detective skills to keep your private information and your computer safe from cyber criminals. With your new skills and experiences, you’ll be ready to consider if Cyber Security might be a future career choice for you!

Girls Who Code mini-club

Pittsburgh Technical College is pleased to host a free, virtual Girls Who Code mini-club this summer for girls going into grades 6-12. Girls participate in club meetings that include coding tutorials, career exploration, collaboration, and more!
No previous coding experience is needed. There are project choices for newbies and also for experienced coders looking to grow their skills.

CS Zero Introductory Python
CS Zero, developed by CMU’s CS Academy, introduces Python to middle schoolers. Python is a popular computer programming language, and this eight-hour introduction to Python is geared towards girls and boys who would like to give coding a try. Students will learn to write code that creates engaging graphics and simple but colorful animations. We’ll stretch your creativity and problem-solving skills!
