VIRTUAL CAMPS
Girls Who Code mini-club (virtual)
Pittsburgh Technical College is pleased to host a free, virtual Girls Who Code mini-club this summer for girls going into grades 6-12. Girls participate in club meetings that include coding tutorials, career exploration, collaboration, and more!
No previous coding experience is needed. There are project choices for newbies and also for experienced coders looking to grow their skills.
Who: Girls in grades 6-12 during 2022-2023
Date: Tues. July 19 – Friday, July 22
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Location: Virtual – students will need a laptop/desktop with a microphone
Cost: Free
Enrollment is limited to 16 students.

CS Zero Introductory Python (virtual)
CS Zero, developed by CMU’s CS Academy, introduces Python to middle schoolers. Python is a popular computer programming language, and this eight-hour introduction to Python is geared towards girls and boys who would like to give coding a try. Students will learn to write code that creates engaging graphics and simple but colorful animations. We’ll stretch your creativity and problem-solving skills!
Who: Students in grades 7-9 during 2022-2023
Date: Tues. July 19, 2022 – Friday, July 22, 2022
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: Virtual – students will need a laptop/desktop with a microphone
*The instructor will hold optional virtual “office hours” from 3:00 – 3:30 to provide extra help.

Yummy & Smart Cooking workshop
If you love to cook, join us to discover easy ways that our kitchen choices can enable kids and teens to help fight climate change. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll create a yummy and affordable plant-based dish that is good for you and good for the Earth! We’ll be working in the gleaming kitchens of PTC’s Culinary Arts program and led by an inspiring instructor from PTC’s American Academy of Culinary Arts.

Spread the Word through Coding
In this workshop you’ll design and code a brief Earth-friendly message of your choice that will enable you to “spread the word” about climate change or water pollution. You’ll bring the letters to life through animation, sound, and music. In this workshop we’ll use Scratch (block-based coding), and no previous coding experience is required. Plus, we’ll discuss the make-a-difference opportunities in STEM careers.

Sunshine & Dirt workshop
In this hands-on and slightly messy workshop, we’ll experiment with building mini hydroponic gardens, mini compost bins, and cardboard solar ovens (and we’ll cook s’mores!). Plus, we’ll work together to create a yummy organic fruit salad. In doing so, you’ll discover easy and fun ways that kids and teens can help fight climate change and water pollution. Plus, we’ll discuss the make-a-difference opportunities in Culinary Arts careers. Please be prepared to be outside for part of the workshop (weather permitting) and possibly get dirty.
