PTC students and mentors participate in America250PA

Kudos to our America250PA team of students and mentors for their commitment to a historic project preparing to recognize our nation’s semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary, in 2021. Four of our students, advised by Dr. John Scarpino, IST; David Hertz, IST; Frank Schurter, Design; and Jennifer Waldo; Business, competed with teams from other Pennsylvania colleges to design, develop, and pitch a concept that could serve as the integrated marketing strategy for the America250PA launch. Students who participated included B. Acker, Design; C. White, Design; B. Maitland, Business; and J. Foley, IST.
The students were asked to create a campaign to launch America250PA statewide, reaching all Pennsylvanians. At least three marketing channels had to be used, including direct mail as one of those channels.
Dr. Scarpino said that “This was a great opportunity for getting great minds to come together and be creative. The toughest part of the challenge was finding the time to work together and the project management to allow for collaboration. The collaboration experience with students, faculty, staff, and other schools was the best experience. Students really had to hone in on project management skills and prioritize school, work, and life.”

For Web Design and Development student C. White, “The best part of this process has been being a part of the team, and spontaneous thinking and on-the-spot planning. Having strong opinions isn’t always the best; you have to learn to put them down and listen to other ideas. We won just by going through the process, elbow to elbow, with other really good schools.”
While our team was not chosen to advance to the next round of competition, the experience was unforgettable for those involved and placed PTC on the same playing field with traditional colleges in Pittsburgh.
