Rebekah Little
Class of 2018, Hospitality Management Administration
Current Job Title: Assistant House Manager
Current Employer: Family House
Please provide a brief job description and list any awards or recognitions you have received:
I work for a non-profit organization called Family House where we house people who come to Pittsburgh to receive medical treatment. We house patients and their family members while the patient is staying in the hospital. We have a total of three locations. I began working here in July of 2018 and have been promoted to Assistant House Manager. We work with all the main hospitals in the Oakland area which include Shadyside, Magee, Montefiore, Presbyterian, Falk, Allegheny, West Penn, VA, and Hillman Cancer Center.
Explain any interesting projects that you have worked on:
In the time that I have been here, working with each guest is a project in itself. As I deal with the public, I get to see a softer side that I wouldn’t normally see when working with them at other jobs. It is amazing how simply a smile, saying “Hi, ”or offering a listening ear can go. When I see others going through something that is so hard and difficult, especially when they have been here an extended period of time, it is nice to see them be so grateful for something that we can sometimes take for granted. I have met some really great people since I’ve been here.
What did you learn at PTC that still inspires you to this day?
I think one of the things I learned that still helps me today is how important it is to never give up. When dealing with our guests you sometimes have to be sensitive to what they are going through. I learned so much while attending PTC. My teachers were amazing. They never gave up on us and I have learned that in life you can never give up. Life is hard, messy, and can throw you curve balls. However, through hard work you can do anything.
What and who were your biggest influencers as a PTC student?
My teachers were my biggest influencers at PTC. They were always there to answer questions and only wanted to see each one of us succeed. Even when you were having a bad day they could make you feel better. Getting through school is something that you can’t do without them. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I would share to never be afraid to go after what you want, but remember to think how things are going to impact you in the future. There are many things that if I could go back and have a do-over I would do them 100%. However, life does not work like that so we can only learn from our past. Never be afraid to chase the things that you want in life. I am still learning that and trying, but in the job that I have life is never guaranteed. You may not realize it now, but the things you do now will impact your future.
