Matthew Kimberly
Class of 2017, Criminal Justice
Current Job Title: State Correctional Officer
Current Employer: Pennsylvania Department of Corrections
Please provide a brief job description and list any awards you have received:
As a State Correctional Officer, I maintain care, custody, and control of incarcerated individuals. During my career, I have been awarded the American Legion Award at Academy Graduation for Professionalism.
What did you learn at PTC that still inspires you to this day?
I learned that while in the law enforcement field, communication is key, but it also can be a great barrier. Using other options to communicate such as pen and paper or utilizing another person who speaks that language, can sometimes be key to understanding the situation fully.
What or who was your biggest influencer as a PTC student?
My instructors were all great influencers during my time at PTC, but Dr. Shannon Wintruba really helped me. She encouraged me to apply for police postings and kept me on track with assignments.
Is there anything else you’d like to share? Personal accomplishments?
I would say that getting a job in your field right away is key. Even though it might not be exactly the position you want, use it to gain experience and knowledge. Use it as a stepping stone to build your career.
